Network Circle Coverage (NCC)

This allows subscribers to call a PSTN number in any district headquarters and adjacent area, as defined by DoT, irrespective of distance but within network, at airtime charges plus local DoT access rates only, thereby, saving on DoT inter-city STD charges. Any subscriber who doesn't apply for the NCC feature would be billed for inter-city STD charges (as per DoT rates) and applicable airtime rates for calls made from mobile on PSTN outside the SDCA location of the originating call.

WAP

The latest innovation in mobile telephony, it enables the user to browse the Internet on his handset screens however, handsets which are WAP unabled are required for using this service.

Call Barring

This feature allows you to bar incoming and outgoing calls using a four-digit password selected by you. This is a security measure to prevent the possible misuse of your cellular phone. This feature will work only if the Call Divert feature is de-activated. You can selectively bar all incoming calls or all outgoing calls as well as outgoing ISD calls. You cannot selectively bar outgoing STD calls. The service can be obtained at an additional cost of about Rs.75/- per month in Mumbai.

Call Divert

This feature allows you to divert an incoming call to a landline or to any AT & T cellular. This way you don't miss out on any important incoming calls. Calls can be diverted when you are busy, unavailable or traveling. The call can be diverted to any landline or cellular within the AT&T network area. Calls cannot be diverted to a cellular of another service provider. The service can be obtained at no additional cost in Mumbai

Call Conference

This feature allows you to speak with five people at the same time from wherever you are. It is just perfect for times when teamwork matters so much to job success. You can have a conference with either cellular or landline phones including STD and ISD calls. All calls will have to be initiated by you. All your calls will be charged the Airtime and DoT charges as applicable. The service can be obtained at no additional cost in Mumbai.

Call Waiting / Call Hold

This feature allows you to receive another call when you are already answering or making a call. You get a beep indicating an incoming call. Using the 'SEND' button you can receive the call by placing the first caller on hold. You can switch between these two calls using the same button. You will be charged airtime for both the calls. The service can be obtained at an additional cost of about Rs.75/- per month in Mumbai.

Caller Line Identification Restriction (CLIR)

This feature enables you to restrict your cellular number from being displayed on the receiver's cellular phone. It helps you maintain complete confidentiality of your number. The service can be obtained at an additional cost of about Rs.75/- per month in Mumbai.

Caller Line Identification Presentation (CLIP)

This feature helps you to identify the caller by displaying the number on the handset. Since you know the caller's identity, you can respond suitably, depending on the importance of the call. You can return the call later in case you are unable to answer immediately. The service is provided free of cost on all bill plans except the Standard Bill Plan, where it is charged about Rs.75/- per month in Mumbai.

SIM CARD CARE

The SIM Card can be permanently damaged, if

It is frequently or roughly inserted or removed.

The wrong side is inserted or removed.

It is bent or twisted.

It is scratched or written upon.

Anything is stuck on it.

It is exposed to extreme temperatures or magnetic fields.

Your SIM Card can be used with any compatible GSM 900 MHz phone.

PIN / PUK

The SIM Card has a security feature called the PIN / PUK- a four-digit number. You can change this number to any four-digit number of your choice using the handset. Once set, three wrong attempts of entering the PIN / PUK can get the SIM card blocked temporarily. It now requires the Master PIN / PUK number to unblock the SIM. Generally ten wrong attempts to enter the PUK number can get the SIM card blocked permanently and it will require a SIM exchange.

CALLING PLAN OPTIONS

Caller ID, three-way calling, voice-mail, numeric paging, call forwarding and Internet access are just some of the great options offered to calling plan subscribers.

Use the night-time advantage: Service providers often give away bundles of night time and weekend minutes for mere sums of money, maximizing your talk time value. 9 to 9 landline charges, low call charges, cheaper sms etc. are some of the cool features available.

Know your home coverage area: This is very important, if you don't want to be presented with a bill showing astronomical roaming charges. If you know you are out of the service area at any point then limit your calls to only the most essential.

Understand all the features of your plan: Familiarize yourself with all the features included in your plan and make sure you know what you're getting in exchange for extra fees.

SERVICE AREA

Ask yourself. Do you want a cellular phone for emergency use? Will you be using your phone/service around town? Travel a lot? Planning a coast-to-coast?

Whether local, National or International you'll want to choose a calling plan that encompasses the physical boundaries of your calling needs. While using your cell phone on an occasional trip away from home may add extra roaming or long-distance fees to your bill. National plans, are more expensive than local plans, but will give you the freedom to call regardless of your geographical location.

TECHNOLOGY

In India, we use the digital network specified as GSM 900 (Global Systems for Mobile communications). The digital standard, including CDMA, TDMA and GSM platforms, allows for more callers to at the same time, occupy space on each of a service provider's cells, making it the superior choice for highly populated or metropolitan areas. Disadvantages to digital systems are their lack of unified technology and a small, metropolitan-focused calling area

ANTENNA

A Universal Antenna Booster is a great accessory for any cell phone. It extends the range of your antenna and gives you clearer conversation. If you have trouble with static then this Universal Antenna Booster can help. Instead of struggling with static or a low signal, you can easily use your cell phone anywhere around town.

Some phones and services struggle with the reception of a signal. An antenna booster is especially necessary for these brands and services because it is the easiest way to increase your signal. And a universal antenna booster sticks easily to any phone. Because it can be used for all phones, you don't have to struggle with finding a service that fills your needs.

FLASHINGS

Individualize your phone with fun flashing accessories. Whenever you receive a call your phone lights up! Flashing accessories look cool, too. Know when you're getting a call without disturbing anyone with the ring. Flashing accessories light up when you receive a call, so you'll always know- even if your ringer is turned off!

Flashing accessories are the latest craze for mobile cellular phones. Techno flashing antennas are great for when you're at the club, movie or meeting. You can see that you're getting a call even when you can't hear it over the noise.

FACE PLATES

Face Plates are the greatest rage in cell phone accessories. Manufacturers are coming out with lots of great styles and colors, to fit every taste. If you're bored with the standard black cell phone faceplate, then check out all the options available online and at all mobile phone shops. You can find faceplates with great colors or

designs. Keep your phone looking like new with a new faceplate. With all that you put your phone through, it can get scratched and start to look old. Instead of buying a new phone, you can get a brand new face plate to replace your old one.

A rapid battery charger can charge a lithium-ion battery used with a digital phone in two hours, compared to four hours by a standard charger. Rapid chargers for the car plug into the cigarette lighter adapter and can provide a full charge in two hours. Phones can charge and be used for conversation simultaneously, although the charging time lengthens when the phone is in use.

CIGARETTE LIGHT ADAPTER

It is an adapter that is used to charge your mobile phone when you are travelling in your car. It could be either an accessory or some manufacturers give them as part of your mobile phone. Just connect one end of your mobile phone to this adaptor and the other end into the cigarette lighter socket in your car. The mobile phone battery gets recharged by drawing the DC current from your car battery. Before you opt for this, ensure that your car has a cigarette lighter in it. You can charge your mobile phone while travelling in your car.

FAST AND LIGHT CHARGER

It is a feature by which the mobile phone can be charged quickly. It normally takes 4-5 hours to charge a phone without a fast and light charger. With this feature it takes only 90 minutes to do so.

CHARGER TRANSFORMER

The charger transformer helps you to recharge your batteries. It does so by converting alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). It is located in the Adaptor of the mobile charger. You should not use charger adaptors different from the one recommended by the manufacturer as it could seriously damage your instrument. Costs around Rs.350 onwards

CRADLE

A gadget to hold the mobile phone when you are in the car. The cradle can sometimes be attached to the cigarette lighter in the car (which draws power from the car battery using a special cigarette lighter adapter) to charge the mobile phone battery while driving.

BELT CLIP

This is a clip in the form of a pouch in which the mobile phone is kept and this helps in carrying the phone around your belt. This is mainly a convenience gadget for those who do not wish to carry the phone in their hand, pocket or bag. Keeping the mobile in the pocket could be quite uncomfortable and if kept in the top pocket, it could slip out if you bend down. Hence, you may opt for a belt clip. Frequent travelers, salespersons and doctors find these very useful. Some covers come with a detachable belt clip as well. These cost around Rs. 50. These molded plastic belt holsters are specifically designed for your individual phone. The belt holster holds your phone securely so you can be sure that you will always know where it is. You can be confident that you will always have your cell phone and that it will always be within reach. Belt holsters are great for people who depend on their phone or are always on the go. When your cell phone is securely fastened to your hip with a belt holster, you will always know exactly where your phone is. No more digging around in your purse or pockets. And having it so close means that it will always be accessible. No more missed calls because you couldn't get to your phone. It's always easily within your reach.

HEADSET

It actually has one earphone to hear the person and a microphone a little below it, near your mouth, to help you speak into the phone. Doctors often advise that very frequent usage of the mobile phone (handset) to your ears could effect your health, however, this has not yet been proved. The headset is much like your ear phone. One end is connected to your mobile phone socket and the other end is plugged into your ear. Headsets are available for Rs. 250 onwards.

CAR KIT

It is a kit provided with various accessories, which makes it easier to use the phone in the car. The car kit includes a plug-and-play handsfree solution (i.e. an ear phone which allows you to keep your hands free while talking), a cigarette lighter adapter (which allows the phone to be charged with the cigarette lighter outlet in the car), a car cradle in which the phone can be placed in the car. You should also follow strictly the traffic rules. In Pakistan, there is a fine of Rs. 100 if you are caught talking on your phone while driving. The car kit keeps your free for driving. Car kits cost around Rs.800 onwards. You also get chandsar kits for as low as Rs.500 and such, but they only the hands free the charger. Most of the shops in India do not keep contain flash light chandargers, cigarette lighter charger, etc.)

HANDS FREE KIT

Hands-free kits allow you to convert a handheld phone into a speakerphone, thus allowing you to talk on the phone while you safely drive or work. Your hands are free to do other things. A handsfree also enables you to talk comfortably without straining your neck as you don't have to crunch your phone between your neck and shoulder. Hands free also reduces your risk of exposure to harmful radiation and the radiation waves get directed away from your ear and head. Kits start at Rs. 200 for do-it-yourself; plug-in kits with power converters, speakers and microphones. More sophisticated kits require professional installation and include a microphone that typically attaches to the sun visor above the drivers seat, a speaker that is mounted near the dashboard, a cradle that holds the phone and a junction box where all cords connect. Installations costs about Rs. 500.

MOBILE CHARGER

Mobile charger is a device that charges the phone. It can be a desktop charger, (a desktop charger has to be placed on the desk and the phone has to be placed on it for charging), or a travel charger which is in the form of a cord. This is available for Rs. 500 onwards.

Travel charger - Phones are usually sold with standard AC battery chargers. Rapid travel chargers can cut charge time in half. Charging times vary based on the type of phone and battery.

CELL PHONE COVERS

Cell Phone covers prevent buttons from being pressed inadvertently. These protective cases protect a phone from dust, moisture and scratches and other damage that can be caused by accidental dropping of the phone, while still allowing you to operate the phone. They also protect your phone from excessive heat and provide temporary protection from drizzles, which is a why they are so much in demand especially in Pakistan. The covers also make the carrying the phone easier and convenient.

Protect your phone against thefts

The International Mobile Equipment Identity umber (IMEI) (a 15 digit code) is programmed in the phone at the time of manufacture. This will help the police track down the phone if it is stolen. To know this number: 1. Type *#06# on the mobile. 2. A number appears. 3. Confirm this with the number on the battery. If this does not match then it means that the phone has been tampered with or is refurbished. 4. Note the number in a safe place.

Tip

Turn off the phone, take out the battery and put it in again. Rest batteries for 24 hours before charging. It is known that generally even when your phone is "sleeping", it is not.

Battery Don'ts

Do not short-circuit. A short-circuit may cause severe damage to the battery.

Do not drop, hit or otherwise abuse the battery as this may result in the exposure of the cell contents, which are corrosive.

Do not expose the battery to moisture or rain.

Keep battery away from fire or other sources of extreme heat. Do not incinerate. Exposure of battery to extreme heat may result in an explosion

Battery Do's

Fully charge/discharge battery up to 4 cycles before achieving full capacity of a new battery

Fully discharge and then fully charge the battery every two to three weeks.

Run the device under the battery's power until it shuts down or until you get a low battery warning. Then recharge the battery as instructed in the user's manual.

Remove from the device and store in a cool, dry, clean place if the battery will not be in use for a month or longer.

Recharge the battery after a storage period Ensure maximum performance of the battery by optimizing the device's power management features. Refer to the manual for further instructions.

How long will my new battery run

Battery run-time is difficult to determine. Actual battery running time depends upon the power demands made by the mobile phone. The use of the screen, the device and other accessories results in an additional drain upon the battery, effectively reducing its running time. The total run-time of the battery is also dependent upon the design of the mobile phone.

Can I recycle my old battery

NiCad, NiMH and Li-Ion batteries should be recycled. Be environmentally conscious - do NOT throw these batteries in the trash.

How long do typical batteries last

Generally, 11/2 - 3 years, or 500-800 charge-discharge cycles. As the rechargeable battery begins to die, there is a decline in the running time of the battery, till it reaches to 50% of its running time, and you need a new battery.

What Are Volts and Milliamp-hours (mAH)

These are ratings on every battery. Milliamp-hours or (mAH), is one-thousandth of an amp-hour (1AH = 1000mAH). The voltage of the new battery should always match the voltage of your original unless the batteries are different chemistries. NiMH and Li-Ion batteries have different voltage ratings, even if they're for the same device.

What is "memory effect"

A partially discharged battery at times does not fully discharges before recharging. It sort of "forgets" to do so. This is what is the memory effect. For e.g. if you fully charge your battery and then use only 50% of its capacity before the next recharge, eventually the battery will become unaware of its extra 50% capacity, which has remained unused. The battery will remain functional, but only at 50% of its original capacity. To deal with this, always fully discharge your battery, before recharging it. This can be done by, unplugging the device's AC adapter and letting the device run on the battery until it ceases to function. This will help your battery remain healthy.

My new battery isn't charging. Is it defective

One needs to discharge and recharge a new battery at least 2-4 times for it to reach it's maximum rated capacity, as most of these new batteries, are not charged. An overnight charge or 12 hours, is a good enough time for your battery. An indication could be the battery getting warm to the touch. When charging the battery for the first time, the device may indicate that charging is complete after just 10 or 15 minutes. This is normal with

rechargeable batteries. New batteries are hard for the device to charge; they have never been fully charged and not "broken in." Sometimes the device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, remove the battery from the device and then reinsert it. The charge cycle should begin again.

TALK SMART

A cell phone should be used as a device for communicating. Your chats can be left for a landline. Use your phone smartly to save on your bills.

Buy smart, talk smart, and save money on your cell-phones. Cell phone technology has gone on to make the world smaller, and at your fingertips. Also people can keep in touch and trace each other with much more ease. So go ahead, and keep your date, even if you missed her at the taxi stand. Just talk!!

Let your personal phone be personal

Be discreet about giving out your number

Only give your number to people you actually know, it's your money you'll be spending when they ring you up.

According to new WHO (World Health Organisation) guide rules

Mobile phone users should limit their exposure to harmful radio frequencies by cutting the length of calls.

Hands-free devices cut exposure by keeping the instrument away from the head and body.

Driving cum mobile phone talking should be banned.

Mobile phones should not be used in Intensive Care Units of hospitals as they can pose a danger to patients by interfering with the working of pacemakers and defibrillators.

People with hearing aids should not use mobile phones.

Base stations, which have low powered antennae on their terrace to communicate with cell phones, should not be located near children's schools and playgrounds.

CELLULAR PHONES AND HEALTH HAZARDS

Although no conclusive evidence has been found linking mobile phone exposure to brain cancer, several new studies suggest that the potential threat to health is greater than previously thought. Another cause for concern is the effect on health due to Radio Frequency (RF) exposure. RF can penetrate exposed tissue, is absorbed by the body and produces heat although the body's normal thermo regulating process carries this heat away.

Tracking Battery Strength

Your phone can indicate on its screen when your battery is almost out of power. The indicator can be a battery icon, a "battery low" message or a red light.

Locking your Phone

Locking your cell phone is a great way to ensure you're the only one using your handset. Once you activate the lock mode, you must enter a four-digit code on the keypad each time you turn on the phone. This prevents anyone else from making calls or accessing the phone's memory or menu functions.

Screening your calls

A caller ID displays the caller's number on your phone's screen. It is standard with many digital cellular and PCS (Personal Communications Service) carriers. Some callers can't be identified, depending on how their call is routed to you.

E-mail and Faxes on your phone

You can also send and receive data/fax documents, access the internet, email accounts and corporate databases whenever you are on the move. All you need is a compatible phone and computer and the connecting accessories (unless you use infrared). Your mobile acts as a phone line. Calls are normally charged at the same rate as voice calls. You can ask for this facility from your phone service, for just a little extra charge. And then, you become truly global! In touch with the world at your fingertips!

Alarm Clocks on phones

With most phones, you simply select the alarm option and enter a time. Some alarms will work even when the phone is turned off. Usually, the phone's alarm will sound just like your ringer alert.

Getting Web Updates on your phone

Some carriers offer news, stock and sports updates with activation of a Web-messaging option or service plan. Other carriers provide free news updates as long as you subscribe to text-messaging services.

When you sign up for these services, carriers require you to establish an account either on their Web site or on a Web site designed to provide your updates. Once you establish an account, you will be able to select and modify your updates, including when you receive them, simply by accessing your account via the Web site.

The updates arrive as text messages (also called short messaging service), so your phone needs to support this feature. Depending on the carrier, updates are subject to character limitations ranging from 100 to 150 characters.

How to use your phone as a modem

You can go online to send faxes and e-mail using your cellular phone as a wireless "modem" for your laptop. To do this, you'll need a phone that can function as a modem, a cable to connect your phone to your laptop, and a carrier that offers Internet or data options. For cellular phones without a built-in modem, you'll need to purchase a cellular-compatible PC card modem that works with your laptop. You'll also need a compatible cable to connect the card modem in the laptop to your cell phone. Sometimes the PC card and cable are packaged together as a kit i.e. You can click on the Service Plans tab to see which carriers in your market sell that phone.

Newer phones have built-in modem capability, so your laptop doesn't need a PC card, but you'll still have to purchase a compatible cable to connect the phone to your laptop's serial port.

Voice Activated Dialing

A feature available only on selected phones and hands-free car kits that permits you to dial numbers by calling them out to your cellular phone, instead of dialing them manually. This function is especially convenient for making calls from your vehicle while driving.

Hands Free

An important safety feature that's included with most of today's mobile phones. It permits drivers to use their cellular phone without lifting or holding the handset to their ear. You can speak into your handset by placing it near you during a conversation.

Cellular Phone Accessories

Extra batteries, vehicle antennas, battery chargers / conditioners, battery eliminators, hands free kits, and leather cases, are all the accessories available.

Prepaid Cellular Phone

You pay for the service in advance, where the amount in your account is debited with per call made. When the account has been used, you have to get a new card. A pre-paid phone service does not require the initial investment as the monthly service. However, the per call cost is more in a pre-paid. Also, benefits like free night-talk, and others are not available.

Cellular Phone Carrier

The normal subscription system, where you get a monthly bill for all calls made.

WHILE DRIVING

Do not use the cell phone in heavy traffic.

Do not dial while driving, if it is so important, ask someone to call for you. If you are alone, pull over on the side and dial.

Use your cell phone for short calls.

Be prepared to end your phone call abruptly.

Use memory-dialing options. Learn to use your phone without having to look at it.

Never take notes while driving.

Make sure your phone is easily reachable when driving.

HOW IT WORKS

Scan Channels: A scan for the closest cell site near you is made, so that you can get the strongest signals possible due to your location at the moment.

Send Message: The phone then sends a short message to the cell site verifying the MIN, ESN, and the number that you have just entered to call.

Assign Channel: After verifying the above information and your number, the base assigns a message to your phone, telling it where the conversation is. Talk: The phone then gets on that channel and begins to ring.

Learn how to use Your Mobile Phone Cell Phone

Life without a cell-phone… how did we survive without them? From a fashion statement, status symbol, luxury to a necessity, the journey of cellular telephones has been one of great technological advancement. But do we, who take these "cells" for granted, ever think of the technology behind it? A cell phone service is based on a simple idea. It is like a two-way radio, turned into a circuit switched telephone network, comparable in functionality to its landline counterpart. We had wireless sets before, used by security, police, organizers etc. but cell phones were not only accessible easily, they were more personal.
